The Brief: Delivering a Modern, Green Solution for BAE Systems
In August 2023, Benholm Group approached us with an exciting opportunity to contribute to a state-of-the-art green feature at BAE Systems’ Applied Shipbuilding Academy, part of their £12 million facility in Scotstoun, Glasgow. As a specialist in our modular living wall system, PlantBox, we were thrilled to work alongside Benholm Group on this significant project, which required a large-scale living wall to enhance the building’s design and sustainability efforts.
With the project led by Arch Henderson, an engineering firm with over 100 years of experience, we were tasked with delivering a solution that matched the modern aesthetic of the Academy while adhering to strict security protocols and tight deadlines.
The Solution: PlantBox Living Wall System in Action
Our PlantBox system was perfectly suited for the brief. Working closely with Benholm Group, we provided our modular, stacked box system made from 100% recycled materials. Each module features an integrated water reservoir, ensuring consistent hydration with minimal maintenance. This system not only provided an eco-friendly solution but also allowed for the precision required by BAE Systems, including space for branding.
The design process was seamless as our trade partner Benholm Group created a meticulous Excel plan outlining every module’s placement. Together, we ensured the plants were pre-planted and established before being transported to the site. This preparation was critical for smooth installation and meeting the project’s tight timeline.
Seamless Collaboration and Efficient Installation
As with any high-security site, working with BAE Systems required precision, collaboration, and adherence to strict protocols. Over four days, we supported Benholm Group as they installed the living wall, utilising vertical support straps to ensure the structure was secure. The automatic irrigation system, connected to a mains pressure tap, provided the necessary functionality to keep the living wall thriving year-round.
Our partnership with Benholm Group allowed us to complement each other’s strengths, delivering an innovative green solution that met all the project’s requirements.
The Results: A Vibrant and Sustainable Transformation
The completed living wall is a stunning, eco-friendly feature that has transformed the exterior of the Applied Shipbuilding Academy. By enhancing the visual appeal of the building, the installation highlights the Academy’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and the future of modern shipbuilding.
