It’s that time of year again: The New Year is almost upon us! But before we say goodbye to 2021, we want to share with you our best gardening moments of the year. 2021 has been a fantastic year for vertical gardening and that’s all thanks to our customers, whose incredible support and passion for PlantBox has helped this revolution to grow wild. Take a look at what made our year extra special.
One of the most heart-warming moments of the year was when Gillian decided to educate her children about nature and encouraged them to engage with the great outdoors by creating two vertical allotments using PlantBox. One was stacked high with salad vegetables, the other with 32 strawberry plants. The strawberry plants contained a mixture of early, mid and late crops, so the whole family could enjoy a summer of freshly-picked fruit—what a great idea!
The children were super-excited to watch their home-grown crops grow day by day and to be able to pick their first strawberries of the season. With home-grown strawberries that good, we’re not surprised!
We loved sharing the family’s progress on our social media over the summer. It was so rewarding to see the children enjoying every step of their growing journey and to see them being inspired to get creative in the garden. We can’t wait to see what Gillian and her children decide to grow next summer.
Gillian and her family weren’t the only ones getting in on the home-growing action this year. John, home gardener and happy customer, used his PlantBox to create a vertical allotment of herbs, which proved a success at dinner and with the local bumblebees. He also conducted an experiment of growing fruit and salad, and compared the results to those grown in a grow bag. (Spoiler alert: John found his strawberries grew “exceptionally better” in his living wall!) You can watch all of John’s videos in full on our YouTube channel.
If we had to choose a favourite highlight from 2021, then this would probably be it. We were overwhelmed to receive so many photos and videos from our customers—we’re all about reconnecting people with nature, but actually getting to see your leafy transformations and stunning displays was beyond incredible.
We were especially delighted to see so many people using PlantBox to prove that you don’t need a large space, lawn or raised beds to create a beautiful garden. Among the numerous urban transformations, we saw plenty of balcony makeovers, decking re-designs, patio touch-ups, courtyard reconfigurations and many more!
Check out some of our favourite photos below.
@ahouselikethis used their PlantBox to create a living wall of wellbeing wonder! Designed with plants that look and make them feel wonderful, it also has practical uses. The flowering plants scent the air and encourage pollinators, while their favourite herbs provide fresh ingredients for cooking.
“Spending more time at home during the first lockdown and having family outside of London in the countryside reminded us that, while we love city life, we forgot how restorative being close to nature can be.
“We decided to create a living wall to boost our wellbeing, including plants that can scent the space, be used in cooking and, most importantly, make us feel great.” —@ahouselikethis
@finkpinkart shared her PlantBox vertical garden with us on Instagram back in May, stacking it almost entirely with lobelia, and watched her vertical garden grow throughout the summer.
“It’s right next to our seating area so we get to watch the bees coming and going, it’s just lovely.” — @finkpinkart
@theedwardianrenovation transformed their indoor living space with a PlantBox vertical garden. As well as looking, sounding* and smelling incredible, these 80 plants help create cleaner air, reduce stress and improve wellbeing.
*Thanks to the cascading watering system—the soothing sound is like a miniature waterfall!
Joel wanted to create a relaxing outdoor space surrounded by nature and transformed his balcony into an urban jungle. Alongside three PlantBox living walls, he added a row of PlantBoxes to the outside edge to completely surround himself in nature.
Chloe and her mum brightened up their garden using their PlantBox Living wall. In Chloe’s words, “My mum is a keen gardener and I think she’s created a masterpiece.” We couldn’t agree more! Chloe also said, “My friends have thought it was fake because it looks so gorgeous. We get so many comments about what a great idea it is. Next year I’m hoping to do another smaller wall!” We can’t wait to see it!
@selinabusby packed heaps of indoor plants into a small area of her kitchen using PlantBox. The mix of ferns, peace lilies and large-leaf plants like calathea not only look incredible, they also act as round-the-clock filters to clean the air around them, helping to support occupants’ mental health.
“Lots more growing to do, but delighted with it so far.” Jo installed her PlantBox living wall along her garden fence to help hide the eyesore that was the bare brick wall of a newly built house. Now Jo’s garden is walled by nature and looks incredible!
@cherrycroftgardener used her PlantBox living wall to brighten up a dull, messy space (we all have them!) under the kitchen window. The area doesn’t get much sun, so she used lots of shade-happy evergreen plants, including heucheras, ferns, ivy and grasses. We love that the trailing plants have been left to grow down and those heucheras are bloomin’ brilliant!
In addition to seeing your PlantBox living walls, we were also fortunate to hear how much they mean to you. 2021 has certainly been an extraordinary and challenging year, and it was moving to read so many positive messages telling us how your living walls have helped boost your wellbeing, support your mental health and make you smile on those dull rainy days.
“I just wanted to send you a message to say how happy I am with your product. I purchased 30 PlantBoxes almost a year ago and have to say how impressed I am with them. A few days ago the weather was miserable, but just look at how amazing this beautiful living wall is at night with mood lighting! Even when it’s awful outside it makes me feel so happy when I look out of my happy space.”—@paulglenn71
“Looking at this from my garden office, even on a rainy day like today, puts a smile on my face.” — Diane
What is sure to be a gardening highlight for many people this year was being able to return to our favourite gardening shows: the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival. The whole of the Growing Revolution team had an incredible time meeting with customers, returning and new, and discussing all things vertical gardening. We loved collaborating with other exhibitors and it was such a proud moment to see PlantBox at not just one or even two but SIX sites throughout the show and to see vertical gardening being incorporated into so many award-winning displays. We’ve been looking forward to next May ever since for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2022—we hope to see you there!
One of the highlights for the Growing Revolution team at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show was when @siobhanfre came to visit the stand to share a photo of her PlantBox living wall, which she had planted up earlier in the year. Siobhan had recently moved into her new flat and the first thing she had wanted to do was inject as much nature as possible into an otherwise concrete and barren back garden. The result was this brilliant, in-bloom wall of living, breathing plants.
Barely a year after being launched, we were thrilled PlantBox was voted a RHS Chelsea Sustainable Garden Product of the Year 2021 Finalist! The competition recognises the best new garden products and it was an honour to see PlantBox alongside such innovative and green-thinking finalists. Entries were judged on the following criteria: innovation, visual appeal, functionality, quality, value for money and environmental sustainability.
At Growing Revolution, we’re committed to greening up the planet with more than just plants and sustainability is at the heart of PlantBox. We take UK household waste and turn it into an eco-friendly, stackable vertical planter that’s made from 100% recycled materials. But we don’t stop there! You can read more about how PlantBox is sustainable in our blog and in our sustainability statement.
When it came to the media, 2021 turned out to be a very busy and exciting year. PlantBox was featured in various national newspapers and magazines and appeared on TV, including Channel 4, BBC Scotland, RTÉ One, and multiple times on ITV. It was great to watch PlantBox being talked about in various ways, whether it was to help bring sustainable living into the home; as a sustainable, space-saving solution to help transform a small and rather extraordinary space; to create a vertical allotment of edibles; being highlighted as a top 10 trend; getting people interacting with nature; and to create a stylish outdoor space.
Launching PlantBox during a global pandemic isn’t exactly what you want as a new business. But it has brought us real joy to be able to reconnect people with nature at a time when they have needed it the most. Thank you to all our customers who have left us a review on Trustpilot, commending PlantBox and our service, and helping this revolution to grow. We are rated ‘Excellent’ with a rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars. We always love hearing how your PlantBox living wall has transformed your home (and how your plants are settling into theirs).
We believe in a greener planet and try to do our bit to help things along. We take ordinary UK household waste and transform it into gorgeous vertical gardens made from 100% recycled materials, which are manufactured in Norfolk (UK) and are built to last. Our packaging is made in Cambridgeshire (UK) from 100% recycled paper and we use compostable bags to hold the small bits. We don’t use any single-use plastic or wasteful padding. But this year we decided that wasn’t enough, so we have since pledged 1% of PlantBox sales to 1% For The Planet, a global organisation that supports non profits who are tackling our most pressing environmental issues.
