Watering is easy

Watering is SO easy!

Each planting trough in a PlantBox green wall has a water reservoir that holds 1.8 litres of water – that’s enough to keep plants watered for 1 to 4 weeks, depending on the season and location. A specially designed water-wicking felt draws the water up, providing a constant water source directly to the plant roots, as they need it. This means that your plants will have plenty of water even in the hot summer months.

No more fretting that you forgot the watering on hot days!

There is also a clear water level indicator on every trough, so if your strawberry plants are thirstier than the salad or herbs, you will know about it and can water when any trough needs it.

You can’t overwater either, because there isn’t any excess water. That means the roots never become waterlogged, which is very harmful to the plants. – so, you need never fear ‘planticide’ ever again!

This method of watering reduces water waste because all the water in the reservoirs will get used by the plants, when they need it. There is no wastewater sitting in the bottom of the troughs like standard planting containers. Read more about our commitment to sustainability.

The office staff keep the plants healthy and watered.

The reservoir is very easy to fill up. Each PlantBox trough has a watering tray at the top which channels water into the reservoir. A clip-in filter helps to regulate water flow when you’re filling up, and stops anything else getting into the water tank and contaminating the water.  PlantBox being watered – video

This cleverly simple watering system means that you can make the most of your valuable time in the garden: more time caring for your plants or sitting back enjoying the view, and less time watering!

How much water does it need?

Each trough’s reservoir holds 1.8 litres of water, and there is an indicator float that shows you the water level. So you can simply fill until the yellow indicator is at the top (and points to ‘F’ for full!) If the yellow arrow is at the bottom of the indicator slot, pointing to ‘E’ empty, then it is time to fill up.

How do I fill the lower PlantBox troughs?

PlantBox is designed to stack on top of each other, creating your living wall. This is when the watering gets really clever! When the box on top is full it will start to overflow into the box beneath. This one will then start to fill up, and you’ll hear a very pleasant waterfall sound effect. In this way you can fill a whole stack of PlantBox units easily with a watering can or a hose from the top trough. If you are going to install your living wall indoors, we recommend standing PlantBox on a drip tray (not included with your original purchase) to protect your floor in case of accidental spills.

The PlantBox living wall system was designed with simplicity in mind. We wanted to create a living wall system that was truly easy for people to install and look after themselves so that you get all the joy of gardening or houseplants without the pain of daily watering. For years commercial growers have used water-wicking technology to deliver a constant supply of water to seed trays and now we have developed this idea, applying it to vertical growing – this means gardening is much more accessible for people with small gardens or less time on their hands.

This cleverly simple watering method means that you can grow a really wide variety of plants in your living wall, because the soil can always draw up more water through the felt from the reservoir as the plants use it. Even the thirstiest of plants will always have enough water.

You can even go on holiday for two weeks and not worry about your plants dying!
